OUR STORY
Blokart® was invented in 1999 by New Zealander Paul Beckett. A background in hang gliding and land sailing inspired Paul to build a serious wind-powered toy that was fun, fast and compact.
From small beginnings tinkering in a Papamoa, NZ garage to over two decades of watching a backyard passion evolve into a global sport, the Blokart community now extends all over the world.
"Blokart continues to exceed our wildest expectations, connecting us with people we never expected who share our love of land sailing. For the recreational rider, Blokart has become a versatile pastime that allows them to sail wherever the wind takes them. For our competitive racers, Blokart provides a chance to meet other sailors and compete on a level playing field under our One Design rules. And for families looking for a weekend thrill, our range of accessories means everyone can get in on the fun.
We feel very fortunate to be part of this sailing revolution, and hope you join us—we know you'll enjoy the ride."
Cheers,
Paul, Matt & the Blokart team

FAQ
What does a Blokart cost?
Check out the Blokart online store to browse our karts and accessories or contact your local dealer.
Where can I sail them?
On any firm surface at least the size of four tennis courts. Examples include parking lots, grass fields, airstrips, beaches at low tide, deserts, and dry lake beds. Our Blokart ice blades accessory can also replace the wheels for winter sailing. Visit the Blokart locator page to find places to sail in your region.
What happened to the Cromoly Karts (Comp, Classic, & Sport)?
Over time, the demand for these models reduced to the point that it was no longer viable for us to continue supplying this option. If you require spare parts for your Cromoly Kart, the current Pro Model (featuring stainless steel parts) will fit in 99% of situations. Browse in our online store.
How small do they break down?
All Blokarts are delivered packed into their (.78 m x 1.18 m) carrying bag, which can easily fit into the trunk of most cars, or airplane checked baggage.
How long do Blokarts take to set up/pack down?
Approximately 10 minutes, no tools required. Step-by-step instructions can be viewed in our support section.
What do they weigh?
Approximately 29 kg (64 lbs). Light enough to check onto an airplane.
What size sail do I need?
The 4m sail is the most commonly used size. Calculate the most suitable sail size for you with this handy chart:
Body Weight (kgs) vs. Wind Strength (knots)
3kn | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 | 30 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
30kg | 5.5m | 4m | 3m | 3m | |||

50 | 5.5m | 4m | 4m | 3m | 2m | 2m | |
60 | 5.5m | 4m | 4m | 4m | 3m | 2m | |
70 | 5.5m | 5.5m | 4m | 4m | 3m | 2m | |
80 | 5.5m | 5.5m | 4m | 4m | 3m | 3m | 2m |
90 | 5.5m | 5.5m | 4m | 4m | 4m | 3m | 2m |
100+ | 5.5m | 5.5m | 4m | 4m | 3m | 2m |
How fast do they go?
As fast as you want to go! The sheet rope acts like an accelerator in a car. Typically speeds of 40-60 kph (25-40 mph) are achieved but speeds of over (106 kph / 65 mph) have been recorded.
How easy are they to sail?
Most people pick it up within 15-30 minutes. Rental companies set the minimum age at eight years old, which gives an indication of how easy Blokarts are to safely operate. Blokart sailing instructions can be viewed in our support section.
How do you stop?
Just point the Blokart into the wind and you will slowly come to a stop, like a sail boat. At speed, you can throw the Blokart into a slide and it'll quickly come to a stop.
Who can use a Blokart?
Anyone over eight years old of any gender with use of their hands/arms can sail a Blokart.
Where are they made?
Designed and assembled in New Zealand.
What is the difference between fiberglass and carbon masts?
Our standard masts are made from fiberglass, which is very strong, yet flexible. Add carbon mast sections to the bottom of the mast (where most of the bend occurs) and you will improve performance. Note: Carbon mast sections are essential when using the big 5.5 m sail (fiberglass is too flexible). A full mast explanation can be viewed in our support section.
Is there a National Organization?
Yes, New Zealand (NZBAI), Europe, Australia, and USA (NABSA) have governing bodies for clubs, events, insurance etc.
Do you race them?
For sure! Blokart National Championships are hosted annually by over 14 countries. The Blokart World Championships are held every two years in different locations around the world and are open to all who register and meet the International Blokart Racing Association's equipment standards. Learn more about racing.
Do you race in divisions?
Sure, Blokart racing is One Design, which limits what you can do to your Blokart and what you can spend on it, to keep everyone on a level playing field. We have two classes: Production Class, which is a Blokart straight out of the factory box, and Performance, where you can use a POD body shell, carbon mast and a few other performance components.
How much maintenance is required?
Not a lot. Flush out the wheel bearings and re-pack with grease every once in a while and check over the Blokart before each use to ensure everything is tight. Tires might need replacing from time to time, but they are not expensive. Maintenance tips can be viewed in our support section.
How many Blokarts have been produced
Blokart International Ltd. has been in business since 2000 and in our first 10 years almost 10,000 Blokarts were produced.

A note from the Blokart Team
Caution: The Blokart is a lightweight performance recreational/racing machine; it's designed to be used on a hard, flat surface. Although catalogues, ads and videos may depict Blokart riders engaged in extreme manoeuvres, it is not designed for all terrain use and this activity is extremely dangerous and will void your warranty. Whether you call it jumping, curbing, stunt riding, showing off, intentional tipping or whatever, any crash or other rapid stopping caused by solid objects (e.g. the ground, curbs, walls or other karts), can put extraordinary stress on your kart. This could "cause it to fatigue prematurely." Blokarts and their components have limitations with regards to strength and integrity, and this type of riding can exceed those limitations. So don't come crying to us. Doing this dumb stuff can cause serious injury or even death.
